We recently had the pleasure of meeting Trong Nguyen, founder of LaBou, a successful restaurant/cafe/bakery chain in the Sacramento area. He is a Vietnamese American who dedicated himself to the pursuit of making the best possible croissant. Not only was he able to make an excellent croissant, his entrepreneurial savvy led him to start his own business that has now flourished into 27 bakery and cafe locations. We plan to conduct a complete interview to get to know him better and see what makes him tick.

In June we plan to put together a 3 on 3 basketball tournament as a charity fundraiser for My Sister’s House, a shelter for battered women and children of Asian-American descent. Our goal is to raise $1000 with the tournament. We plan to charge $20 per person and allow teams to have up to 4 players. Currently we are working on getting a place for the tournament. This isn’t as easy as you may think. Hopefully someone in the community is willing to donate a gym for use. Currently we are in touch with Chinese Community Church on Fruitridge. They have done work supporting My Sister’s House before.

We plan to offer a Playstation 3 as the grand prize. Our hope is that this will appeal to a larger audience and get people more excited about coming out and supporting the fundraiser. The PS 3 is expensive! At last check it’s going for $400. We’re not exactly sure how to pay for this, but we don’t plan on using any of the proceeds raised to pay for it. We are hopeful that people will donate to help support the cause otherwise we’ll pay for it ourselves.

We have three goals with the tournament:

1. Raise Awareness and Support for My Sister’s House. Many folks probably aren’t even aware that a place like My Sister’s House exists. We’re hopeful that this event will bring them some notice and that more people will support them in the future.

2. Bring the Asian-American Community Together. There are many Asian basketball leagues in town. Hopefully we can draw a diverse crowd of Asian-Americans together and help build bridges between different communities.

3. Have Fun. We love basketball and we love friendly competition. Hopefully this will be a good time had by all. We also plan to introduce a bracket idea, where people can fill-out a bracket to predict who they think will win the tournament. The person who has the best bracket will win a prize.

So what’s left to do? Well, we need to secure that gym right away. Hopefully the folks at CCC will be kind and generously allow us to use their facilities. Things like this are never simple. There’s issues with insurance and other items that makes a simple event complicated. Hopefully people will have mercy on us and allow us to put on this event for a worthy cause.

Other items we need to handle are donations, advertising, tournament managers, tournament helpers, etc. If you’re interested in helping out please contact me at boardmunky@asianunderground.org.
